Description

Overview:

As one of the lightest bolt-action rifles on the market, the 90 Peak is an ideal choice for the decerning mountain hunter. The lightweight of the 90 Peak is largely thanks to Sako’s innovative carbon fiber stock design. These synthetic stocks are made using a Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) – a technology used by the aerospace industry for structures that need to be both strong and lightweight. RTM technology uses precisely machined molds and a vacuum technique to bond resin and carbon filaments, creating a multi-layered 3D mesh structure that surrounds the stock in every direction. The result is a solid foundation that easily withstands heavy sustained recoil and promotes accuracy. The RTM stock also features a textured surface for a superior grip in adverse weather conditions, a palm swell to fill the shooter’s hand, and a raised cheek piece.

Receiver:

Like all of the rifles in Sako’s 90 series, the Peak is built around the 90 Receiver. As the heart of the rifle, these receivers are designed using a unique broaching method to minimize the contact area between the bolt and receiver. The is made possible by creating an internal surface that matches the profile of the bolt locking lugs. To achieve this, the steel of the receiver is carved by pushing multiple bolt-shaped cutting tools through the receiver to create a straight interior surface. The result of this manufacturing process is one of the smoothest operating bolts available – an essential feature when fast repeated shots are required. The 90 receiver has also been reinforced from previous models to easily withstand heavy recoil and promote superior accuracy. Torsional bending and twisting have been minimized by designing the specific shapes for critical areas, and flat receiver bedding provides better repeatable accuracy than a conventional round receiver design. Furthermore, the 90 Peak’s receiver features integrated picatinny rail sections for virtually unlimited optics-mounting options.

Bolt:

The innovative design and construction of the receiver is perfectly complemented by the bolt. The bolt’s ultra-short throw goes hand in hand with the smooth operation, making follow up shots nearly instantaneous. To ensure reliability extraction, the bolt features a dual plunger design similar to the one found on Sako’s sniper rifles. This bolt design is ideal for dangerous game, and was verified by cycling the bolt over 5 million times without any malfunctions.

Barrel:

All Sako 90 rifles are equipped with a cold hammer forged barrel. Like the receiver’s manufacturing process, Sako’s cold hammer forging process results in a smoother surface when compared to other rifling methods. Because the steel cannot escape when hitting against the mandril, it creates a smooth, straight, and uniform surface, enabling out-of-the-box-accuracy and completely eliminates the needed for a break-in process. These match-grade barrels also utilize an innovative muzzle-crowning process to enable the pressure to escape the muzzle evenly, thus improving accuracy. Crowns are protected from external hits by a recessed shape, and absolute geometrical uniformity of the crown is mandatory for accurate operation of the rifle. The 90 Peak’s barrel in particular features fluting to help dissipate heat generated from multiple shots.

Features of the Sako 90 Peak Rifle:

  • Stock – Traditional style stock made from Grade 2 walnut. Features raised cheek piece, optimized pistol grip geometry, and rubber recoil pad
  • Receiver – Built using a unique broaching method to minimize the contact area between the bolt and receiver, resulting in exceptionally smooth bolt manipulations and flawless accuracy
  • Bolt – Short throw for faster cycling and dual plunger design for ultra reliability
  • Barrel – Special cold hammer forging process provides out-of-the-box-accuracy

I believe I was one of the first people to get one of these beautiful SAKO, carbon fiber rifles from europtic! The Rifle arrived to the FFL with damaged packaging on the inside of the rifle box, but rifle was in mint condition. It comes with a screw on compensator and only one magazine. The Sako 85 magazines of the same caliber are interchangeable and will work, but it will be nice when the sako 90 official magazines are in stock and available to purchase. This rifle is extremely lightweight and extremely comfortable to shoot and operate! The carbon fiber stock is not too sticky or aggressive, but definitely more grippier than the first carbon fiber rifle release from Sako! You can certainly tell and it is very evident that this carbon fiber stock will most likely last forever. It is definitely built to be durable and handle any weather condition as well. The trigger is adjustable, but I kept it on the factory setting when I took it to the range to site in the rifle! The trigger was crisp, although a little lighter setting would be preferred. The rifle has a 1:8 twist, which is something new for a 243 caliber. I chose to shoot all leadfree ammunition out of it to see how the groupings would be and to test the feeding of the different Ammunition brands. I started with Barnes ttsx factory loads 80 grain. I then moved on to Lapua 90 grain Naturalis factory loads and then finished with Nosler E-tip custom ammunition, from Choice Ammunition out of Montana. All 3 of these Ammunition variations shot very accurate and had no problems cycling through this beautiful rifle. The groupings were all 1 inch or under, and that’s with me shooting off a bench with bags, so I could’ve had better groups if I would’ve shot more and used a lead sled. My 50 year old eyes are not the best anymore either. I believe this rifle without a doubt is capable of half inch or better groups. The 10 green difference between the 80 grain and 90 grain ammunition variance, had absolutely no effect on the accuracy. The Nauslar E Dash TIP ended up going through the same hole when firing two rounds! All the shooting was done at 100 yards after sighting the rifle in at a 50 yards to start! However, all of the groups would be more than adequate for any animal that I choose to shoot at! The bolt throw is a different degree than what I’m used to! It is an extremely short bolt throw, but I was getting used to it very quickly and I can easily see it would provide a faster shooting experience with ridiculously fast follow up shots. This rifle screams with quality and craftsmanship and just in case you’re wondering, by this point in my review, is there a Rifle worth the price? The short answer is YES!!! it’s worth every penny! I plan on using lead free ammunition only in this rifle, to see how it performs this year on deer! The Picatinny rail looks nice, as it is part of and built-in to the receiver of the rifle. Keep in mind though, some scopes will not work due to the built-in rail. If you plan on mounting the scope, using 1 inch low or any low mounting position, I would highly recommend getting a scope with a lot of eye relief! I chose the 1 inch low Swarovski Z3 rifle scope, 3x9x42! I would not get anything bigger than this for a scope objective. Otherwise it will look bulky on this premium compact rifle and only add weight! I chose not to use the compensator when shooting the rifle at the range and still felt absolutely no recoil whatsoever. The rifle was extremely smooth and comfortable to shoot. The ejection of the ammunition is ridiculously fast and effortless, as the casings come, flying out at the correct angle every single time, due to the dual plunger system! The 20 inch barrel is more than adequate out to 500 yards and the cartridge is big enough to take down any animal on this planet. If you were on the fence about getting one of these rifles, I would highly recommend you do it. They are simply phenomenal and deadly accurate!! I’ve been shooting the Sako brand of rifle for many many years and so has my dad. The quality and accuracy speak volumes, along with the name and having the best there is in a rifle!!! Quite simply, there is no better rifle than a SAKO Rifle! CLAY Hawkins @europtic is the salesman and man to speak to when you called to order one of these beauties. He’s the best salesman they have, and will never let you down! He has a vast knowledge of firearms, and his expertise is unrivaled in the Firearms business. I’ve been dealing with him and talking with him for many many years, and I respect this man as an expert in the field of Firearms. Call clay and get your Sako!
